Jonathan Tasini is clearly enjoying himself today after collecting the necessary number of petitions to appear on the primary ballot against Hillary Clinton.

He told us that he collected "north of 30,000, easy," and that he "would have gotten a lot more petitions signed if it weren't for the damned rain."

He said the petitions keep flowing in via Federal Express and personal visits to his headquarters, and that most of those who signed were "so furious about the war."

Jonathan Tasini’s campaign says it has collected the signatures the candidate needs to enter the Democratic primary against Hillary Rodham Clinton. This afternoon, his campaign announced that he plans to appear at the Board of Elections next week to deliver signed ballot-access petitions.

So now the question becomes this: will the Clinton camp or its allies in the Democratic Party move aggressively to keep him off the ballot by legally challenging the validity of the signatures. In anticipation of such a challenge, Mr. Tasini and his supporters say they have collected 30,000 signatures, even though he needed only 15,000 to get on the ballot.

Anti-war march in Chappaqua
By KEN VALENTI
THE JOURNAL NEWS

CHAPPAQUA — Some 130 protesters chanted, sang and carried signs calling for an end to the war in Iraq yesterday as they marched through the streets of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's home community.

"We wanted to do something patriotic on Independence Day, and there's nothing more patriotic than exercising our First Amendment rights to protest government policies with which we disapprove," said Dr. Arthur Grant, 45, who was out with his wife, Dr. Roxan Saidi, a native of Iran, and their 4-year-old son, Cameron.

Sen. Clinton faces Democratic opposition

By JOHN MACHACEK - WASHINGTON BUREAU

The Journal News

Dogged for months by anti-war activists, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton now faces a mounting backlash among liberal Democrats upset with her support for the Iraq war and search for the political middle ground.

Some liberals at a recent "Take Back America" conference in Washington booed and heckled Clinton when she said it would be wrong to set a deadline for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq. And some of New York City's Democratic clubs — all liberal bastions — either have not endorsed Clinton in her Senate re-election bid or are backing an anti-war candidate hoping to challenge her in a September primary.

A Democratic Bid That's Anti-Clinton All the Time

With his glasses, balding head and leprechaunish smile, Jonathan Tasini doesn't look like a political threat to anyone. But he has become a thorn in Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's side as she seeks a commanding re-election victory this year to provide momentum for a possible presidential run in 2008.

Mr. Tasini is not, however, waging his attacks from the right, as one among the legions of so-called Hillary-haters. Instead, he is trying to rally fellow Democrats against her over a single theme: Mrs. Clinton's early and vociferous backing of the Iraq war, an issue that many Democrats believe will become more contentious as the midterm election approaches.
