The Republican party has launched a major attack to portray the Democrats as against the Iraq war and caught in the grip of an extremist fringe that wants to pull out of the conflict.
In television ads, newspaper columns and television interviews Republican politicians and conservative commentators have branded Democrats as weak in the 'war on terror'.

An upstart candidate defeats an incumbent U.S. Senator. It happened in Connecticut, where Ned Lamont beat Joe Lieberman in that state's Democratic primary. And Lamont's victory is giving Jonathan Tasini some hope as he aims to take down Senator Hillary Clinton. NY1's Molly Kroon filed this report.

"I believe this war should never have happened," said Jonathan Tasini.

Hoping to ride the wave that took Ned Lamont to victory in a Connecticut primary, Sen. Hillary Clinton's little-known challenger tried to back her into Joe Lieberman's political corner Thursday.

“That vote in Connecticut had at its core a larger message: Something is amiss in our country, and pro-war, pro-corporate Democrats must be held accountable for their votes and their actions," said Tasini.

WASHINGTON -- Ned Lamont's victory over Joe Lieberman Tuesday has sparked surprising reactions from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Jonathan Tasini.

Clinton, whose continued support of the war drew an attack from anti-war filmmaker Michael Moore yesterday, has already sent Lamont $5,000 through her political action committee, according to aides.

Tasini, Clinton's anti-war opponent, while delighting in Lieberman's defeat, chided Lamont for self-financing his campaign.

Observer super-intern Samuel Jacobs has this dispatch from Jonathan Tasini's press conference at City Hall earlier today:

Backed by two-dozen supporters holding blue Jonathan Tasini signs--"Vote for what you believe in"--Jonathan Tasini chastised New York reporters at his 12:30 press conference.
"The press has not covered this race properly," he said, with black cowboy boots firmly planted on the first step of City Hall. "We're polling at the exact same number that Ned Lamont was polling at, trailing by 55 points."

Sen. Lieberman's loss has implications for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's primary

So here's what it requires for the Democrats to get over their more timid instincts and ask the tough questions about Iraq that could set them clearly apart from President Bush and the Republicans in a midterm election year. Just deny an incumbent senator, loyal to his party and generally progressive on most issues, nomination for a fourth term. A few hundred thousand votes in Connecticut have done what almost 3,000 American deaths in Iraq could not.
