NY1 stands by decision not to host Democratic Senate debate

NEW YORK (AP) — An all-news cable television station is standing by its decision not to host a debate between Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and the anti-war activist challenging her in the state's Democratic primary.

NY1 has been criticized in recent weeks for refusing to include a Democratic Senate debate among its political offerings this summer. So far, NY1 has hosted debates involving the state's Democratic gubernatorial candidates and Republican Senate candidates. It will host a forum for the state's Democratic candidates for attorney general later this week.

An Incumbent This Time, Clinton Is Keeping a Lower Campaign Profile

By RAYMOND HERNANDEZ

At this point in 2000, it was difficult for New Yorkers to miss Hillary Rodham Clinton, who buzzed around the state attacking her Republican rival in a flurry of campaign appearances and television advertisements as she sought to become the only first lady to capture a seat in Congress.

This time around, though, Mrs. Clinton, who is seeking re-election this fall to another term in the Senate, is not nearly as great a presence on the campaign trail, even taking time out last Tuesday to travel to Chicago, where she addressed members of the nation’s largest public service union.

Clinton plays Democrat

Tuesday, August 15

The lobbyists, pundits and political hacks who make up the permanent occupation force of Washington have been in a panic since last week's defeat of Sen. Joe Lieberman in the Connecticut Democratic Primary.
The conventional wisdom is that Lieberman lost because he supported the Bush administration on the Iraq war. But that isn't the sole reason why Lieberman lost to Ned Lamont.

The problem is that people like Lieberman, who supported the invasion of Iraq, are trying to change the subject now that things have gone horribly wrong.

How MoveOn Finesses the War on Her Behalf

Who's Afraid of Hillary Clinton?

By NORMAN SOLOMON

The leading pro-war Democrat in the Senate is hoping for a landslide in the New York primary next month. And unless progressives quickly mobilize to dent her vote total, she's likely to get it.

Hillary Clinton, of course, intends to be the Democratic presidential nominee in 2008. But first there's her quest to win big for reelection. If antiwar voters cut into Clinton's percentage in the primary on Sept. 12, despite overwhelming media visibility and a massive campaign war chest, her momentum would take a hit.

As Conn. Goes in '06, So Goes The Nation in '08?

At the beginning of what is shaping up as America's summer of discontent, U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press" for a discussion about his opposition to the war in Iraq and the prospect that he might seek the presidency in 2008 as the candidate of Democrats who want their party to propose a dramatic departure from Bush administration foreign and domestic policies.

The program's host, Tim Russert, asked Feingold: "When will you decide whether you're running?"
