Hillary bombs at V.I.D.; club backs Tasini for Senator

By Lincoln Anderson

Turned off by Hillary Clinton’s position on the Iraq war, plus the recent news that archconservative media mogul Rupert Murdoch will be hosting a fundraiser for her, the Village Independent Democrats last week threw their support behind one of Clinton’s rivals, Jonathan Tasini, in the September Democratic primary.

In the biggest upset of the night at last Thursday’s V.I.D. endorsements, Tasini got 35 votes to Clinton’s 13.

Tasini — a former president of the National Writers Union who led a successful lawsuit by freelancers against The New York Times — supports an immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. Clinton, who voted to authorize the war — and doesn’t regret her vote — opposes an immediate pullout. Antiwar activists are blasting her for what they call her “nonposition” on the war.

TODAY: Ride for Peace takes off from NYC!

Submitted by Anna Mumford on May 10, 2006 - 5:02pm.

Jonathan's 600-mile bike tour of upstate NY launches tomorrow from the NY Vietnam Veterans Memorial (50 Water St. - near the Staten Island ferry terminal) in Manhattan. The press conference for the event begins at
2:00PM. Following the event, Jonathan will start riding to New Rochelle, the first stop on the tour. Come join us at the press conference and, if you want, bring your bike and ride with Jonathan up the West Side Highway bike path.

The Ride For Peace will cover 600 miles from New York City to Buffalo, and make stops in 16 cities during its three-week journey. In each location Tasini will highlight the human and economic cost of the Iraq war for that community. Tasini will be asking people to sign a petition that mirrors legislation proposed by Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts to end the war in Iraq.
