The Ride for Peace

Submitted by Stephanie Cannon on April 28, 2006 - 11:37am.

Today we are proud to introduce the Ride for Peace. Beginning on May 11, Jonathan will be biking across New York State, from NYC to Buffalo, stopping in dozens of towns and cities along the way. He'll carry a petition urging delegates to the New York State Democratic Convention to adopt a resolution to end the war in Iraq. The resolution is based on a bill introduced by Congressman James McGovern which prohibits the use of taxpayer funds to deploy United States Armed Forces to Iraq. This type of legislation was instrumental in ending the Vietnam war and we hope the New York delegates will heed the call, knowing that the majority of New Yorkers oppose the war.

Jonathan will be collecting petition signatures at every stop he makes. He will then present the petition to the Convention when it convenes in Buffalo May 30-31, and ask the delegates to adopt the resolution.

Click on the Ride for Peace logo for more information, to join the ride and to sign the petition.

Jonathan Goes to Jail

Submitted by Stephanie Cannon on April 28, 2006 - 11:22am.

Yep. Your favorite Senate candidate, Jonathan Tasini, spent most of yesterday in jail. He was arrested for committing a peaceful act of civil disobedience in support of the right of New York University grad students to organize.

Jonathan joined with student protestors and supporters who sat down in the street near Washington Square Park during a demonstration calling for the university to negotiate with the union. Members of GSOC/UAW Local 2110, the union of graduate teaching and research assistants, have been on strike since November 2005.

In the last two weeks, three New York chapters of the Progressive Democrats of America have made their choice in the U.S. Senate campaign: Jonathan Tasini For Senate. The three chapters--in Ithaca, Albany and the chapter covering the 14th Congressional District--are the first three PDA chapters to make their choice in this important race. All have chosen a real progressive Democrat whose campaign is growing every day.

We are honored to have the support of PDA members. These endorsements are swelling the ranks of our grassroots campaign, which touches cities and towns throughout the state.

Stay tuned for more exciting developments in the coming days!
