Our campaign has harshly criticized Senator Clinton for voting to reauthorize the Patriot Act. In light of new revelations regarding President Bush’s actions when signing the reauthorization, just how big a mistake Senator Clinton’s vote was becomes even clearer.
As the Boston Globe reported on Friday, when Bush signed the bill into law on March 9th, he added a signing statement, after reporters had left, which said he was not obligated to inform Congress about how the FBI used expanded police powers.
The President’s action would be shocking if he had not shown his disdain for Congress and the Constitution time and time again. As the saying goes, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.†The Patriot Act should have been voted down for its assault on our Civil Liberties. However for senators such as Clinton to vote to reauthorize the act and point to the increased protections provided, shows that they still have not come to understand the simple fact that this administration must not be trusted to uphold the laws that Congress passes. We await Senator Clinton’s response to this latest ignominy, but considering her silence thus far on impeaching or censuring the President, we’re not holding our breaths.
