Why is the Democratic Party caving in on the Alito nomination? In the past few days, a number of Democratic Senators have publicly stated that they either do not think a filibuster will be launched or don't think it will succeed.
Unfortunately, we do not know where Hillary Clinton stands on the nomination--and certainly there is no sign that she is prepared to ake any leadership role in defeating the nomination.
I don't believe you can call yourself pro-choice, or pro-worker or pro-civil liberties if, as a Senator, you do not engage in a full-throated, passionate fight to stop the Alito nomination.
What does the Democratic Party stand for if it will not use every possible tool to defeat a nominee who clearly will vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, who will favor big corporations over workers and who will pave the way for the Executive branch to take for itself sweeping, dangerous powers that threaten the system of checks and balances that attempt to make sure that our country is ruled by the will of the people, not the whim of an all-powerful leader?
Use the filibuster. Make the Republicans try to use the so-called "nuclear option" (ruling that a filibuster cannot be used for judicial nominations). Have the fight. Stand for something--for the rights of millions of women and men whose right will be eviscerated by a Judge Alito.
